Commissioned by St James Street Big Local and Waltham Forest Council, Alex was tasked with creating street furniture for the newly renovated St James Street area of Walthamstow. Situated at the gateway between the start of the High Street, the bustling area of St James Street, and the entrance to Coppermill Lane leading down to the Walthamstow Wetlands nature reserve, this project celebrates the rich history of creativity and craftsmanship in the area.
Inspired by the notion of fluidity and movement, the furniture seamlessly blends into the urban landscape. Crafted with techniques akin to boat building and using reclaimed Iroko worktops sourced from local schools, the result is a series of strikingly dynamic and contemporary benches that complement the restored Victorian shopfronts.
